Isn't it basically a fancy word for the adress of the picture? Like on web, they hav net, org, com, and stuff like that? You can save a picture you made on things like GIF,PNG, and others, when ya upload them they will stay the same, but certin websites only use certain things...... (Is that right, or am I thinking of something else?)
